uDigital was born from a simple idea: digital agencies in South Africa could do better. Founder Siyabonga Leon Mabiza saw clients getting poor service from profit-focused firms. He built uDigital to be different; a tech-savvy, data-driven partner treating clients like family. His global agency experience shaped this vision for truly first-class results.
But great ideas need strong foundations. Early on, uDigital struggled with slow, unreliable local web hosting. Slow speeds hurt clients in areas with poor internet. Missing backups caused scary near-disasters during website moves. Basic support and rigid pricing added extra headaches. These problems threatened their promise of top performance.
Discover how uDigital turned frustration into triumph by switching to Cloudways hosting. See how automated backups, faster speed, and 24/7 support transformed their work. They slashed website build times, boosted client results, and won big contracts with confidence. Want to know how they did it? Keep reading! You might find the key to your own success.
Cloudways: What inspired you to establish uDigital as a full-service digital agency, and how has your background shaped its focus on data-driven strategies and performance media?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: We identified a niche in the market because many agencies in South Africa are revenue-driven, and clients often don’t receive first-class treatment. We launched uDigital to be a tech- and data-driven agency that remains independent to offer personalized, first-class service.
Before founding uDigital, I worked as a consultant for many years and saw the need to empower clients with bespoke solutions and a more personal, family-like approach. I’ve worked with top global agencies such as Dentsu and IPG Mediabrands, where I held leadership roles. I was also part of the team that launched IPG Mediabrands in South Africa through RepriseMedia, now known as UM.
Cloudways: How has your agency’s growth since 2017 influenced your initial approach to web hosting, and what challenges did you face with hosting providers before discovering Cloudways?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Initially, we used local hosting providers but realized our clients needed more than just basic hosting. Speed became a major issue, especially in parts of Africa with low internet connectivity, and fibre wasn’t widely available. This led us to explore international hosting options, and that’s when we discovered Cloudways.
Some of the challenges we faced included the lack of automated backups, limited technical support, and inflexible pricing; local providers often charged per website, which became costly for larger projects. Cloudways offered a more flexible, cost-effective solution with integrated features, making it the ideal choice for us as a growing agency.

– Cloudways’ intuitive dashboard and hosting stack allowed uDigital to scale efficiently while simplifying server management.
Cloudways: Can you describe a specific client project where your previous hosting solution became a bottleneck, and how that experience pushed you to reevaluate your infrastructure needs?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: I would say, I remember when we were doing a migration for a website, and we had asked the hosting service provider if they had a backup on their back-end. We proceeded with the migration, but we faced some difficulties and needed to roll back. We contacted the service provider, and they did not have a backup. The cost to us was immense, and fortunately, one of our developers had saved a copy on his machine and was able to upload it to retain the old website.
This was a huge oversight from the hosting service provider, and we saw the potential loss and damage that would have been caused to our agency. We then understood that we needed a different backup solution that required less to no human interaction, and again, Cloudways was a no-brainer.
African-based hosting solutions are also moving to the cloud, but we have a competitive advantage as we have the experience and the time that is needed to understand how cloud hosting works, and this provides an immeasurable benefit to our clients. Local hosting still has a long way to go, but we are happy that we can offer that support and advice.
Cloudways: What specific criteria did you prioritize when selecting Cloudways as your hosting partner, and how did it align with uDigital’s commitment to efficiency and client results?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Well, as mentioned, for us, we needed these core solutions in Africa versus our local service providers. We needed automated backup, live chat support (24/7), and scalable hosting as our clients vary and scale with time. As such, we need less time to worry about the hosting and instead focus on content updates and servicing our clients. Cloudways was really an easy pick in this regard.
We had peace of mind in knowing that should anything happen on our live sites, we can easily pull a backup in no time. The staging environment made it even easier to manage our change management processes, giving us easy access and ensuring that our clients’ websites are not affected by development. This really shaped our commitment to efficiency and client results a lot.
Because in our first year of migrating one of the sites to Cloudways, we moved at least 40 websites to Cloudways, and it was really an easy decision for us because we were comfortable and we were able to sell our hosting services with confidence knowing that we had a reliable solution on our hands.

– With Cloudways, uDigital seamlessly migrated and now manages over 40 websites through a unified, scalable interface.
Cloudways: How has Cloudways’ performance (e.g., uptime, scalability, or load times) directly impacted your ability to deliver on client KPIs for the 204+ campaigns you’ve completed?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Shew! We can say a whole lot! To give you an idea, our campaign landing pages are built into Cloudways. One of our campaign landing pages loaded in less than 3 seconds, and this was able to push our performance on media significantly.
We have seen our lead conversion rates spiking from 4% to 5% to the averages of 15% or more by just improving user experience. Users often exit sites very early in the session if the site lags or content is not visible, and so with Cloudways’ load times efficiency, we are able to build robust campaigns that drive results by ensuring a consistent user experience from ads to landing pages and form submissions.
Cloudways: In what ways has Cloudways streamlined collaboration between your developers, data analysts, and clients, given your emphasis on bringing teams “closer to [your] processes”?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Immensely, as we are able to work with freelance developers with ease by defining the kind of access we can give, we can create an application within a server, and are able to grant an application-specific access within a server, which really makes it easier for our teams to work on various applications.

– Cloudways’ Team feature made it easier for uDigital to collaborate across developers, analysts, and clients.
Cloudways: What role did managed hosting play in helping uDigital maintain its reputation for turning around “impossible tasks” while managing 113+ websites and apps?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Managed hosting became a cornerstone of our operational success. With Cloudways, we were able to delegate server maintenance, security patches, and performance monitoring to a reliable system, which freed up our internal team to focus on creative and strategic delivery.
Managing over 113+ websites would have been a nightmare if we were still using traditional hosting solutions. The simplicity of spinning up a new server or cloning an existing application meant that even under tight deadlines or with last-minute client requests, we could deliver.
Clients often approach us with urgent web builds, and we’re able to turn them around in days instead of weeks. Managed hosting allowed us to build a reputation for agility and trust.
Cloudways: How do features like Cloudways’ staging environments or server-level controls empower your team to balance creativity with technical reliability in campaign execution?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Staging environments are a lifesaver. We use them for all high-value clients and campaign launches. Our creative teams can experiment freely, while the developers simultaneously run stress tests, optimise load times, and test scripts before pushing to production.
This ensures zero downtime during deployment and preserves the brandof our clients. Server-level controls also enable our DevOps team to scale resources during peak traffic periods, ensuring seamless performance without compromising campaign delivery timelines.
This balance between creative flexibility and backend control is what allows us to execute campaigns with technical precision.
Cloudways: Reflecting on your years of experience, what measurable business outcomes would you attribute to your hosting infrastructure?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Since switching to Cloudways, our average web build turnaround dropped from 3 weeks to under 10 days. Campaign go-live errors reduced by over 85%, and our bounce rates on paid media landing pages declined significantly. As a result, we’ve seen higher engagement metrics and improved lead quality.
We currently retain over 87% of our clients year-on-year, and several clients have cited “technical reliability” as one of the reasons for sticking with us. One of our most successful political campaign websites handled over 1.2 million visits in just under 5 days; something we could not have handled without cloud infrastructure.
We’ve also been able to pitch and win large-scale contracts thanks to our confidence in scalable, secure infrastructure.
Cloudways: Would you recommend Cloudways to other digital agencies focused on performance-driven results, and what advice would you give them based on uDigital’s success story?
Siyabonga Leon Mabiza: Absolutely. I always say: “If your infrastructure can’t scale with your ambition, it will cost you your next client.” For agencies serious about results, Cloudways removes a major layer of risk.
My advice? Don’t wait until a server crash to rethink your hosting. Start early, automate your backups, optimize for speed, and use staging environments religiously.
Cloudways gave us the confidence to go after large accounts and deliver exceptional value consistently. It’s not just about uptime; it’s about being able to say yes to opportunity without hesitation.
