Server-side backups involve creating a copy of your entire server including all applications, settings and data usually to an external server or cloud storage. It’s like capturing the entire server environment at a specific moment in time. Now, let’s explore how to schedule and perform on-demand backups for your server and let me tell you it’s as simple as adding an event to your calendar so you don’t have to worry about the technicalities. You’ll be scheduling backups like a pro in no time! Also, one thing you should remember is that the backup processing time depends on the size of your application files and database. So, here’s how it goes: Step 1: Select the server Log in to the Cloudways Platform, click on the Servers tab in the top menu bar and choose the server you want to back up. Under Server Management click the Backups tab on the left sidebar and there you will find two options on the right-side BACKUPS panel, where you can manage your Backup preferences. Here you can either schedule or set on-demand backups. Step 2: Schedule backup You can use the Schedule Backup option to automate backups at your preferred time. Please note that your server uses the UTC time zone for scheduling automated backups. How to schedule backup on Cloudways So, first you enter your preferences for the Schedule Time, Backup Frequency, and Backup Retention, then click the Save Setting button and you’re done! Step 3: Local backup On the same screen, you will see a Local Backup option. Activating the local backups option will create an additional copy of your backup on your server so you can download it via SSH or SFTP and remember that you will have just the most recent backup available locally and the off-site backup will continue to work as usual at the set frequency. Step 4: On-demand backup On-demand backups let you manually start a backup whenever needed. This functionality is particularly useful when making significant changes to your server. Schedule on-demand backup All you need to do is to click on the TAKE BACKUP NOW button for the on-demand backup. If you have enabled Local Backups this will additionally create a downloadable copy of all the applications present on your server. Application-side backups are more focused covering specific application data and settings on your server. It’s like taking a snapshot of a specific application rather than the entire server. Step 1: Select the application To back up a specific application you have two options: The first one includes clicking on the Application tab from the top menu bar and choosing your desired application. Another option is to select the server where your application is deployed and click on the “www” option to access the application. Step 2: On-demand backup Under Application Management, click the Backup and Restore option on the left side. Here, you can create multiple on-demand backups for your application data, so you’re basically giving your app a backup makeover. Click on the TAKE BACKUP NOW button to initiate an on-demand backup. Backup magic in action! You can also use this section to restore backups. You can either restore a part, or your complete application in one go. Besides server and application backups, maintaining local backups is crucial for data protection. It’s like keeping a spare key to your precious data’s secret vault! Step 1: How to download backups The backups are all downloadable if you enable the local backup option in your server settings, as discussed earlier, so you can always store them on your hard drive or pen drive. But how do you download these backups locally? Of course, I’ll show you. And for that we’ll use FileZilla. If you don’t know what FileZilla is, it’s a free and widely used FTP solution Download backups locally using FileZilla on Cloudways that helps you transfer your files and don’t even worry about the version as the process is the same for every FileZilla version. So, connect to your server via SFTP to download the backup file from the server to your local computer and we are using Master Credentials here to access the server remotely. You can find the credentials in your server details. After successfully connecting with the server via SFTP, you will see a screen like this. Go to the path that says /applications/ / /local_backups and drag and drop your backup file from the server to your local computer. And here’s a free tip: Your application’s name is available under the application settings. Step 2: How to delete local backups If you want to delete the local backup copy from your server, click trash as shown in the snapshot. And that concludes our tutorial on backups.
