Manage cloudways projects

Without structure, the management of multiple servers and applications can quickly become a chaotic mess. On the Cloudways platform, Projects creates a logical structure to group your servers and applications by either campaign, department, or location. This organizational structure ensures you are not only effectively managing your cloud resources, but it also helps you work by grouping related servers and applications together.

In this blog, we will guide you all the way through creating, updating, and deleting a project on Cloudways. We are going to explain it in a way that even a beginner will understand it well and we hope to improve your Server and application management of your Cloud resources. You will not just understand how to perform these actions, but you will also understand why they are important for you. We will share the explanation and screenshots as represented for all the Cloudways users or soon-to-be Cloudways Users.

What is a Project on Cloudways?

Cloudways thinks of a project as a logical way of grouping a server and applications that serves a common purpose or context. For some, you might want to create a project for a marketing campaign that consists of multiple servers, and individual applications; or, grouping servers by geographical location; or perhaps by department.

This logical grouping allows you to:

  • Logically structure and organize your cloud resources.
  • Manage permissions and billing.
  • Quickly access, without confusion, related servers and apps.

Think of projects as folders on your computer, but for your cloud infrastructure.

Projects are flexible, and you might need to update them as your infrastructure evolves.

  • Step 1: Access the Project
    • Log in to Cloudways and go to the Projects section.
    • Select the project you want to update.

How to Delete a Project Safely

If you determine that the project is no longer necessary, you can delete it without the fear of losing any servers or applications.

  • Step 1: Identify the Project
    • Log in to Cloudways, and look for Projects.
    • Select the project you want to delete.
  • Step 2: Remove Project
    • Hover over the grid icon next to the project.
    • Click Delete Project and follow the instructions for confirmation.

Important: Deleting a project does NOT delete the servers or applications associated with that project. It simply removes the organizational grouping.

Why Use Projects for Your Cloud Infrastructure?

If you are managing multiple websites, applications or servers for multiple clients or multiple departments, it can quickly become a mess in your Cloudways dashboard without a clear organization. Projects are exactly what you need.

Projects are a way to group related servers and apps together, much like organizing files into folders on your computer. For example, you may be conducting a marketing campaign with various advertising websites and apps. You could create a project called “Marketing Campaign” and then add the corresponding servers and applications in that project. When you (or your team) log in, you can immediately find everything related to that project without having to scan through unrelated projects.

While we are on the subject of teams, projects also facilitate collaboration. For example, suppose you have a team of developers or marketers who are all working on different pieces of your infrastructure. You can provide access to different projects for certain team members, allowing them to focus on what they need to without being distracted by everything else on your account. This keeps things organized, secure, and also avoids the possibility of changes being made on unrelated servers by accident.

Additionally, projects clarify billing and reporting. If you are managing resources on behalf of more than one client, or for different departments, grouping resources by project allows you to easily view costs and usage by project. This also makes generating invoices easier and grants you visibility into where your cloud budget is going.

Conclusion

Organizing and managing resources logically and systematically not only improves collaboration, it also allows for better management control over your cloud infrastructure. Projects are a strong tool provided by Cloudways in this regard. Now instead of having to add work to each app or server, they can be put into individual projects, allowing you to manage the cloud easier. This guide will give you all the necessary steps to create, edit, and delete projects on Cloudways.

Whether you manage a couple of servers or dozens, Projects on Cloudways enable you to stay organized while allowing you to focus on delivering applications and services.
